The collection consists of the records of the YWCA of Greater Atlanta from 1901-1979. The records include statements, invoices, tax and insurance records, and budgets; administrative records including planning documents, handbooks, minutes, reports, correspondence, and memoranda; and general records including printed material, photographs, scrapbooks, films, slides, and sound recordings. Business, administrative, and general records document the work of the YWCA in Atlanta and of its Phyllis Wheatley Branch. Minutes, reports, and other administrative records are primarily from the Board of Directors, its Executive Committee, and other committees. Fundraising through fashion shows and various kinds of sales is documented as are membership drives and development efforts through the Community Chest and United Way. Topics include social work, camps, Y-teens, and programs for young people about sex education, health, physical education, and recreation. Printed material primarily relates to publicity efforts and to national conventions.

Following two years of organization and planning, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of Atlanta received its charter from the state of Georgia in 1902. In 1912, the local YWCA became a charter member of the YWCA of the USA, and in 1915, the first high school girls' club was organized.
